Alpheus strenuus belongs to the Alpheid shrimp family in the Edwardsii species group (Banner & Banner, 1982). Due to slight morphological differences there are thought to be two sub-species of Alpheus strenuus: A.s. strenuus and A.s. cremnus. These can be distinguished apart by the shape and size of the orbital grooves which are shallow and rounded in A.s. strenuus while A.s. cremnus has deeper broader and more posteriorly extended orbital grooves (Banner & Banner, 1982).
A.s. strenuus was first discovered in Tonga by Dana (1852). However, original specimens of both Dana and Banner & Banner were lost in fires. |
