(A) growth of head fragment of individual A
over 28 days, with ‘a’ representing the site of amputation. (B) Growth of a head
fragment of a second individual over 28 days, with no data available for day 7
as the individual had escaped. Both A and B illustrate clear healing of the
margin at the site of amputation, with the blue spots returning by day 21. By
day 28, the individuals appear almost whole, with minor irregularities around the
point of amputation. (C) growth of tail fragments of different individuals from
day 7 to day 28. Rather than grow outwards like the anterior fragments, the
posterior fragments curled into a ball and sealed the two sides of the cut
margin together. At day 21, directional movement of the tails was observed.
