Figure 10
A summary of the classic life cycle of an ovoviviparous colonial styelid ascidian. Embryos are brooded in pouches until the larvae are released into the water column. Larvae experience a short planktonic period, whereby they are motile in the water column for a few hours, before settling on suitable surfaces. The settled larva undergoes metamorphosis and forms a juvenile zooid, referred to as an oozooid. Blastozooids are subsequently formed via palleal budding. Information acquired from from Svane & Young, 1989.
