The tadpole larva possesses a post-anal tail, a hollow dorsal nerve cord and a notochord. The tail allows the larva to swim through the water column and eventually settle (Monniot et al., 1991). The trunk (head) region contains a ganglion (brain) and a photolith (Kott, 1985). The larva is lecithotrophic and therefore survives off the nutrients supplied by the yolk sac (Ruppert et al., 2004). Larvae can achieve a size of 3 mm in length (Carver, Mallet & Vercaemer, 2005). Scale bar = 0.47 mm. Diagram adapted and redrawn from Carver, Mallet & Vercaemer, 2005.
