A detailed view of the endostylar region of the pharynx shown in Figure 8. Water currents drawn into the animal flow through the stigmata and into the atrium. Small food particles are trapped by mucus lining the stigmata and the pharynx. The trapped food particles are moved into the oesophagus and eventually the stomach via ciliary action (the small black arrows depict the direction in which the mucous is moved via ciliary action). The mucous is secreted by the endostyle and is what renders this organism so effective at filter feeding. Adapted and redrawn from Ruppert et al., 2004.
