This diagram exhibits the morphodynamics of nematocyst discharge, beginning with a typical nematocyst in its stable resting state and ending with an elongated nematocyst having expelled the barbed thread (the pink line). The elongated form of the discharged nematocyst is due to the extension of the twisted tubule (black) that bears three to four rows of spines. This entire process occurs in less than 3 ms and typically in synchrony as multiple nematocysts are triggered at the same time due to their clustered positions.
