Feeding

E. quadricolor obtain nutrients both as opportunistic carnivores using tentacles and through symbiotic relationships. Like most anthozoan, E. quadricolor is most likely capture prey opportunistically as it drifts or swims into the anemones' tentacles armed with nematocysts and toxins. Smaller prey items including plankton may become trapped in the mucus lining of the tentacles and be moved upwards via cilliary action to tentacle tips which are then inserted into the mouth. Larger prey items may also be immobilized and then directed to the mouth via tentacle contraction.
