Eurythoe laevisetis is a carnivorous species that has an eversible pharynx supporting no teeth, jaws or papillae. Whilst it has been known to consume live prey, successful capture is difficult as it lacks proper teeth and jaws (Barroso & Paiva 2007). As it cannot successfully subdue its prey without these structures its main food source is decomposing meat that it sucks up with its muscular pharynx. During feeding the anterior margin of the pharynx exposes itself and forms a lip up to five times longer than its original size. This lip is then placed over the food item where it acts as a large suction pump. Grooves within the internal wall of the pharynx push the food down into the gut (Pardo & Amaral 2006).
