Biogeographic distribution

Sponges, the phylum Porifera, are regarded as the oldest metazoan group (Van Soest et al., 2012; Ruppert et al., 2004). Their success in surviving lies in their ability to constantly adapt to changes in their environment. This, however, is the basis for a highly diverse and widely distributed group. Sponges occur in waters all around the world (see map).

Haliclona cymaeformis can be found in the Indo-Pacific regions in tropical coral reefs.
