Local Distribution and Habitats
The sheltered undersides of dead coral boulders which are thrown up onto the reef crest by storm waves provide a habitat for a further suite of species, including Cypraeids, which graze on the encrusting algae. L. vitellus can be found at depths of up to 8 metres (Beesly et. al, 1996). A species of L. vitellus was taken from the outer reef slope of Heron Island and brought to the University of Queensland for analysis and papillae sectioning.
