Naming

Menaethius monoceros
is often called as spider crab and decorator crab because of its spider-liked appearance and its decorating behaviour.  Latreille (1825) classified it as Pisa monoceros because of its frontalsingle horn (Forest & Guniot 1961; Griffin 1974; Griffin & Tranter1974). In 1852, Dana classified it as a species of another genus Menaethius tuberculatus, which the genus, Menaethius was first described in 1834 by Edwards (Forest & Guniot 1961). The species name, M. tuberculatus was named after its tuberculate carapace. It was lastly classified as Menaethius Monoceros by Alcock (1895).
