Summary
This species of
Hydrozoa
belongs to the order Leptothecata. There are two main stages in their
lifecycle
, the polyp stage and the medusa stage. Polyps can be found in the benthos growing on rocks and shells. The medusa form is found amongst plankton where it feeds and reproduces. Leptothecata are well known for the discovery of
Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)
which is now widely used as a genetic marker for genetic recombination.
