 Fluorescence

For further interest, examination on fluorescent response under UV excitation were conducted. Although it is acknowledge that many marine organism can reflect and sense fluorescent proteins, there are limited study on Palythoa caesia. The image below show that the bright green response to UV excitation from a specimen is type of green fluorescent protein (GFPA) that exhibit green colour fluorescence when placed under blue UV light. We have also noticed green fluorescent only occur on  the mouth part and the coenenchyme where the tentacles and the oral disc did not show any sign of fluorescent response. This is an interesting finding as perhaps this might be a more distinct character to identify species by the fluorescent response occur on different body parts and this may provide further understanding on the ecology and interactions of Palythoa caesia.
