As soft corals do not make calcium carbonate bodies their fossils are very difficult to find, and therefore many gaps between fossil records. The last common ancestor found was the Atractosella cataractaca from the early Jurassic age (Majoran,1987). However, other studies have found that Atractosella can be dated all the way to the Silurian age, and can be represented as the order Alcyonacea, the octocorals (Bengtson, 1981).
