Stimdromia lateralis can be found in a variety of microhabitats, including sand, mud, rocks, corals and sometimes algal beds (Poore & Norman, 2007). The studied individual was found under a coral boulder near reef crest (labelled on the map below).

Like any other members in the genus Dromiidae, Stimdromia lateralis is commonly found carrying a sponge or ascidian cap on its back, thus, this is the reason why they are named "sponge crabs" (Jones & Morgan, 2007).
