Minimize
Molluscs (snails, clams, squid and allies) typically have a pelagobenthic life cycle that includes a microscopic larval stage that can be found in the waters surrounding Heron Island Reef. Mollusc larvae settle and typically metamorphose into benthic juveniles, which grow into macroscopic adults with a range of life styles. However, many cephalopods (squid, cuttlefish and octopuses) live their entire life in the water column (except as encased benthic embryos) and can be found year round in local reefal and inter-reefal waters.  Benthic molluscs are present in all reef habitats, often in great abundance and diversity.
