The first recorded sighting of a chiton was by Georgius Everhardus Rumphius in 1705. (3) Rumphius was an official of the Dutch East Indian Company and provided one of the earliest records of chitons and included it in his book on various natural products. (3) From his description this chiton was probably A. gemmata! (3)
However Henri de Blainville was first to describe the species in 1825 (Figure 1). (1-17)
