The Polyplacophorans have been seen continuously in the fossil record since the late Cambrian.(3) In Australia, fossil chitons have been recorded from the Ordovician, Permian, Miocene and Pliocene. (3)

The fossil record of Acanthopleura gemmata has not been extensively studied, however it has been recorded to occur in the Miocene. (3)
