This sea star species is commonly found on the shallow waters (Clark & McKnight 2001; Coleman 2007). On the Great Barrier Reef region, L. laevigata can be easily identified by its distinct royal/ bright blue color. Like most of the other sea star species, L. laevigata are usually pentamerous radial symmetrical (i.e. possess five arms). The tip of each arm is rounded and the arms are not distinct from the central disc. The tube feet (short projections on the bottom side of the animal) of L. laevigata are short and yellow in color.
