Summary
The genus Branchiomma Kölliker consists of tube-building sabellid polychaetes, commonly called fan worms, that include around 30 species and is characterized by the presence of compound eyes in pairs and stylodes distributed along the tentacles (Capa et al. 2013). They live mostly in sheltered shallow waters, usually in colonies (Licciano and Giangrande, 2008) and can be found all over the world. In Australia, there are currently eight species described. Some species of Branchiomma are considered invaders and can damage its environment (Tovar-Hernandez et al. 2011). On the other hand, they can be used as bioindicators to assess levels of water pollution since they accumulate fecal coliforms and other bacteria in their radioles (Licciano et al. 2007).
