Biogeographical Distribution

Since the assumption of distribution occurring in the Capricorn-Bunker Island Group, collections and analysis of specimens elsewhere are leading to the belief that this species has a much wider biographical distribution than currently know. A discovery made off Magnetic Island on the central/ northern GBR suggests a pan-GBR distribution. Furthermore the analysis of an amphimedon species collected from Dahab, Egypt in, revealing identical characteristics suggests an even wider distribution, with the red sea specimens having a 93% sequence identity with a gene from A. Queenslandica.  There is als evidence suggesting a distribution beyond the pacific ocean, with evidence of a similar species from Southern Japan (Degnan et al. 2010).
