Brief Summary
Amphimedon queenslandica is a demospongiae in the family niphatidae, and genus amphimedon
that was discovered in 1988 on Heron Island, Qeensland, Australia by Sally Leys during a surveying
exercise (Degnan et al. 2008). It was originally mentioned as a reneira species (Leys & Degnan 2001),
and since it has been formally described by Hooper & Van Soest in 2006 from individuals found on islands
in the Capricorn –Bunker Group, Southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. Although prior
discovery an official description needed to be made, as it was the subject of the first sponge genome
project. The reason behind this name is for political region encompassing its location in Queensland
(Hooper & Van Soest 2006).
