Identifying giant clams may be a difficult task. However, most of the clams have different distribution patterns and can be discriminated thanks to that. In other cases, the shape of the shell, the brightness of the mantle and the size of the individual can be used to determine the species (Wells, 1983).

For Tridacna maxima, it may be difficult to discriminate it from T. gigas or T squamosa. T. gigas is generally bigger and the brightness of the T. maxima cannot be confound. To discriminate it with T. squamosa, only one solution, looking at the shell when it is closed. T. squamosa has some typical prominence on the lateral part of the shell.
