Local Distribution and Habitats

Aplysia dactylomela are the most common sea hare species found around Heron Island, and reportedly in the whole of the Great Barrier Reef (Marshall & Willan 1999). They occur all around the island where there are suitably large reef flats with relatively dense patches of algal supply (Marshall & Willan 1999). During the study conducted on Heron Island (September 2011), it was noted that A. dactylomela were highly abundant and found to be moving between sand, coral rubble and algal beds even during the day.
