Content Summary

Codokia paytenorum as with most other bivalves, highly derived molluscs adapted for exploitation of the infaunal benthic habitat, are found to be benthic organisms which live burrowed in sandy substrates in the Indo-West Pacific at depths of 0-55m.

This is in line with its facultatively mobile method of locomotion; it burrows due to the lateral flattening of foot and shell which facilitates burrowing in soft sediments making its life habit infaunal.

It does not have any vision or optical sensory nerves as a filter feeder, instead it feeds with the siphons permitting access to fresh food-and oxygen-bearing water without the bivalves leaving the substrate it burrowed in while remaining sedentary and safe from most predators. It's diet primarily consists of chemosymbiotics3.

It can be found in large numbers akin to being in a colony at one single spot.
