Systematics or Phylogenetics
Ocypodidae currently includes five sub-families: Ocypodinae, Dotillinae, Macrophthalminae, Camptandriinae and Heloeciinae (Manning and Holthius 1981; Fielder and Greenwood 1985).
O. cordimanus can be easily mistaken for the closely-related O. sinensis as both species display similar morphological characteristics, and, in contrast to other members of the genus Ocypode, O. cordimanus and O. sinensis both lack stridulatory ridges along inner surfaces of the chelae (Huang et al. 1998). The distribution of these two species overlaps in Malaysia and the Philippines however they have not been observed to share habitat (Huang et al. 1998). Another closely-related species is Ocypode saratan (Lewinsohn 1977).
