Comprehensive Description

S. hispidus is the largest of the known cleaner shrimps. The body may attain a length of more than 7.5 centimetres and, in some rare cases, up to 90 mm. The three white antennae and antennules are considerably longer than the body. The body and larger chelipeds are spiny (Limbaugh, 1961).

The body and legs are white with bands of red. A red spot is located on the anterior part of the carapace. The bases of the legs of large adults are blue. The antennae and antennules are white. The eyes are brown, and the large cluster of eggs carried by the female are greenish, almost blue (Sterrer 1986).
