Stichopus chloronotus may also be referred to by the common name of Greenfish. Although it is sometimes also referred to as the Warty Sea Cucumber or the Horned Sea Cucumber, these names actually belong to completely different species (Parastichopus parvimensis and Stichopus horrens respectively).

In the past Stichopus chloronotus has also been referred to by other scientific names that are not currently accepted as correct. These include Holothuria quadrangularis (Lesson 1830), Holothuria viridis (Quoy and Gaimard in Cherbonnier 1952), Stichopus (Perideris) chloronotos (Brandt 1835), Stichopus chloronotus fuscus (Pearson 1903), Stichopus cylindricus (Haacke 1880), and Stichopus hirotai (Mitsukuri 1912).
