General Behaviour

Little detail is known about the behaviour of holothurians, although it seems likely that their social structure is quite simple.  Stichopus chloronotus is often found foraging on large and seemingly uniform expanses of sandy, coralline-algal rubble on reef flats (Kerr et al. 1993). They may aggregate in certain areas, although the reasons for this behaviour are unknown (Kerr et al. 1993). S. chloronotus is exposed throughout the day and night, meaning that it does not bury in the sand (Kropp 1983), although some have observed that they seem to hide under coral or large debris at night (Uthicke 1994). They are unique holothurians in that they only feed during the daytime hours (Uthicke 1994).
