Size & Shape

The shell of Cypraea annulus ranges from 9 to 50mm in length but is generally around 15 - 20mm. This species shows female-biased sexual size dimorphism, i.e. females are larger than males.

Cowries do not look like typical gastropods. This coiling is a common feature to gastropods and cowry adults show coiling inside their shell and remnants of a spire. Juvenile cowries look more like conventional gastropods as they posses an obviously coiled shell with a gaping aperture.
