Cyclicity

E. sebana fall within superfamily Xanthidae, and likely exhibit similar cyclic and reproductive traits. Reproductive cycles appear to be related to seasonal timing and microhabitat distribution of the crabs, with intertidal inhabitants displaying differing sexual activity than subtidal sympatric organisms. Studies have shown there is a significant interaction between habitat type and sperm content of male Xanthidae species, along with a greater level of sperm in the autumn season than summer (Wilber 1989). During these periods adult crabs undergo moulting processes in relation to reproductive stages. Mating frequency was also related to season and habitat, with the greatest frequency occurring during autumn periods (Wilber 1989). The moult cycle was not directly related to sperm content or mating frequency, however both are related to season and habitat type (Wilber 1989).
