Many of the stars within the Ophidiasteridae family are very similar in appearance. All have similar aboral patterns and only small variations in colour.
However N. novaecaledoniae does have a few features that can be used to differentiate it against other stars within the family.
Nardoa novaecaledoniae has a distinct yellow colouration. This is segmented by a green or brown mesh pattern. The shape of the pattern can also be used as a distinguishing feature. Most stars within Ophidiasteridae have a fairly constant pattern, meaning each segment of the mesh pattern is of similar size. However the mesh pattern associated with N. novaecaledoniae varies in size. The segments on the central disc of N. novaecaledoniae are much larger than those on the arm.
