Nardoa novaecaledoniae has two common names: the New Caledonian Star and the Yellow Mesh Star. The reasoning behind both names is quite obvious.
N. novaecaledoniae was originally described on a New Caledonian reef and is a prominent species within this area.
The common name the Yellow Mesh Star was adopted due to the colouration and pattern of the star (Boyer 2011).
