Although the elephant slug is easily identifiable by its pitch black mantle and flat white shell, people may be thrown off when the mantle flaps cover the shell (below). A protruding snout and two long tentacles at the anterior (front) end also help distinguish the animal. The elephant snail will usually be found under rocks, except at night time low tide when it relinquishes its refuge to graze.
