Brief Summary

The strawberry stromb (Strombus luhuanus) is a marine gastropod, belonging to the Strombidae family, which consists of five genera and 75 species (Berg, 1974). It is found throughout the tropical and sub-tropical Indo-Pacific region in sandy habitats that are associated with coral reefs (Catterall and Poiner, 1983). It is a herbivorous animal that feeds primarily on filamentous macroalgae (Savazzi, 1991). The shell of S. luhuanus is conical, and closely resembles that of a cone shell. They have well developed eyes and an acute sense of vision, along with a highly flexible and muscularised foot, which allows for the unique 'leaping' movement displayed by strombid gastropods (Berg, 1974). S. luhuanus, along with other strombid gastropods, are very interesting and unique, and will be described throughout this web page.
