Threats
A number of potential threats exist that could possibly jeopardise both the survival and future reproductive success of the Scaley Turban (Turbo perspeciosus). One such threat is temperature change. Throughout the species evolutionary history, changes in temperature are thought to have had a considerable negative effect on the size of the species range and distribution throughout the global oceans (Williams 2007). Accordingly, future changes in ocean temperature that are expected to be associated with global climate change and warming are may further reduce the already relatively restricted distribution.
Changing ocean temperatures will also likely affect a magnitude of other marine species, potentially increasing their effectiveness as a predator, or increasing their dominance over habitat. This would confound the range restriction effects of temperature that would already have been experienced by the Scaley Turban, as any increase in the amount of predation, or increase in competition for safe habitat, would only further add to the threat of population decline and extinction. |
