Alpheus strenuus strenuus is native to the West Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is widespread from the Red Sea to Australia and the Society Islands as well as French Polynesia, But not as far as Hawaii (Banner & Banner, 1982; Chace, 1988). However, the other subspecies A.s. cremnus is limited to New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia where the species has been observed (Banner & Banner, 1982).
