Biogeographical Distribution

Herdmania momus has an essentially pan-tropical distribution which extends to waters around South Africa and Australia (Degnan, 1991). This wide occurrence can be attributed to the species’ fouling nature; the ability to grow quickly on smooth surfaces, such as ships hulls. Anthropogenically aided dispersal has likely resulted in an increase in the species’ initially broad distribution, most recently into the Mediterranean Sea (Shenkar 2008).
