There is wide concern in regards to overfishing of sea cucumbers, with H. leucospilota being one of the major 60 species prized by the majority of worldwide holothurian fishing industries (Taquet et al. 2011).

Furthermore, coral reef environments around the world are under threat, predominately due to human impacts and global climate change (Taquet et al. 2011).  Hence, because their habitat is under threat, consequently so are the species that live there, which in this case is H. leucospilota.
