Many Holothurians have significant biotechnological properties (Taquet et al. 2011).

Sea cucumbers are a rich source of triterpene glycosides, with leucospilotaside C being found in H. leucospilota (Han et al. 2008).  This species also contains three ganglioside molecular species, which are neuritogenically active gangliosides (Yamada et al. 2001).

Each of these discoveries has been important to the manufacturing of current medicines, as well as having the potential to develop new medicines in the future.
